Stacking Your Bracketed Shots

Many digital cameras have a feature known as Auto-Bracketing. This allows you to set the camera to take multiple exposures with a single press of the shutter release. By choosing a certain over and under exposure range you can increase your chances of nailing that perfect shot. If you are shooting for HDR, setting your auto-bracket at -2 and +2 stops can make quick work of getting the exposures you need for that HDR masterpiece!

Because the camera is taking several shots in rapid succession the time difference between the shots is minimal. This can work to your advantage organizing these images in Lightroom. Lightroom’s stacking feature is great for keeping your shots organized and minimizing the clutter in grid view. Auto-bracketing is a perfect situation for stacking. It would be great if all your auto-bracketed shots were stacked together for each composition. You can do this by hand but if you’ve had a long shoot with hundreds of bracketed images this can take some time. Fear not! Lightroom’s auto-stacking capabilities will ease your stacking pain!

More Than Just Keywords

As you know I’m a really big proponent of keywords and using them on all your images. Even if you only apply a single keyword it is still easier to locate that file later than if no keyword was applied. But Lightroom has room for more than just keywords. If you haven’t spent much time in the Metadata Panel then you are missing out!

Start out in the Library Module and you’ll find the Metadata Panel on the right.

Just Add a Touch of Synonym!

Keywords in Lightroom are at the very foundation of organizing your images. If you ever want to find those images again you had better add some keywords now!

Of course, as your collection of images grows, so does your list of keywords. In a previous article I talked about using hierarchies in your keyword list. This helps bring order to your collection and unclutter your list so you can find things. To further help you organize and unclutter, Lightroom supports synonyms. Let’s take a look at this powerful feature.

When you click on the + at the top of the Keyword List panel you are presented with the following dialog:

Building Keyword Lists Outside of Lightroom

One of the most powerful and useful features of Lightroom is its keyword capability. Not only can you create a useful set of keywords but Lightroom allows you to put those keywords into a hierarchical structure. This adds a further level of organization to your keywords. Instead of scrolling through an ever growing list of keywords, you can categorize them in a collapsible structure.
